Today we’d like to introduce you to Consuela Muckelroy.

Consuela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Modern Hippie Clothing got started a little over two years ago. A friend recommended that I start an online boutique. I’ve always had an eye for styling and putting things together. Originally I created an Etsy account where I started creating a distressed music T-shirt. From there, I eventually started my website

Later, I started networking and attending marketing events as a vendor to display my clothing. Now I have a successful online boutique, I still created custom items as well. January I will be celebrating my three years anniversary.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting an online boutique can be challenging. When I originally started, I used a lot of my own money to purchase wholesale items, soon to realize that I had all of this inventory and no money was not getting any sales. I immediately become discouraged and just wanted to give up. From there, I did a lot of research and found that you have to manage your sales, and also market your brand, and also stay consistent. Later, I created a business account via social media like Instagram and Facebook. And utilized their marketing tools to network my site.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Modern Hippie Clothing is for the modern-day women that’s eclectic, and multifarious. My clothes are for the everyday working woman, with an artist eye. Our specialty is custom distress items, we can take an old pair of jeans or t-shirt and bring them back to life with our hand-painted designs. We also have other unique items that are available for immediate purchase. I’m most proud of the site that I created on my own, and the consistency. What sets the modern hippie clothing from the rest is the custom items that we provide, that the custom item that your purchase will be customized only for you.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is a growing city that has a lot of expats. Houston is a great place to start your business, however, overall if you are looking to expand your brand to other cities, then you can always do pop up shops in that city or attend networking events.
